Abstract

I found out about the coup d'état of March 24, 1976 in Argentina on the morning of the 25th in New York, through the radio. So I lived with who would later be the mother of my son Fernando, who was born in Mexico. He worked as a bus-boy at Jan's Restaurant in Brooklyn; a most difficult earthly job: collecting crockery without a tray and cleaning the tables, all at a thousand miles an hour. I did not have any labor induction, my colleagues taught me to turn my fingers into pincers that imprison plates, saucers and cups. I was paid $2.30 an hour. Although it was an iniquitous exploitation, that work and hers saved the lives of two undocumented Argentines in the Empire. I was left with enormous gratitude to the city of New York.
