This article is about comparing graininess in analog photography and noise in digital photography. Starting from the four-dimensional analysis model from the semiotics of the image, the dimension of syntax is retaken in order to describe some photographs to understand the role of grain and noise for contemporary photography. Finally, it reflects on the change in the perception of grain and noise in photography.
