Abstract

The purpose of the following analysis of the work Facundo, written by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, is to show the path towards the construction of the State in the Argentine Republic, in terms of Weber, but adding that the path for the construction of this institution was characterized in a differentiation between friend and enemy as Schmitt proposes. Differentiation that allowed, in part, to control the legitimate means of physical coercion within the territory, in addition, to allow the establishment of regional links, which have been influenced by the figure of the caudillo. That for the time of Juan Manuel de Rosas they were of vital importance, since Rosas's policy was based solely and exclusively, as Sarmiento hints, that he is not with me, he is my enemy. For this, it is important to consider the Latin American context in which the literary work is located, followed by exposing the figure of the caudillo with Rosas and, finally, analyzing the consolidation of the modern State, in the dichotomous "friend-enemy" vision of Carl Schmitt.
